Santa Clarita Mayor Recall Effort Fails

A Santa Clarita citizens group conceded Thursday that it failed to collect enough signatures to force a special election to recall Mayor Carl Boyer III.

“We knew the deadline was coming up,” said Andrew Martin, a member of the Organization of Unsatisfied Taxpayers, or OUST. “But we didn’t have enough signatures.”

Wednesday was the deadline to submit petitions calling for a special election this spring. The group needed signatures from 8,500 registered voters to prompt an election but collected only about 7,000, Martin said.

OUST launched the recall drive last September, charging that Boyer ignored homeowners and bowed to the wishes of developers. Boyer called the charges ludicrous. OUST singled out Boyer because he had supported a controversial condominium project, strongly opposed by homeowners, which the City Council killed last summer.
