TV REVIEWS : Slices of Teen Life in Not-So-Sweet ‘Fifteen’
“Fifteen,” a dramatic series for and about teens, has a hollow ring. It begins tonight at 6:30 on the Nickelodeon cable channel, to be seen hereafter on Sundays at 1 and 5 p.m.
Created by John Binkley, the show follows the trials and tribulations of several high school students. Brooke, a shallow troublemaker, plots to steal sweet Ashley’s boyfriend, Matt, who has a drinking problem. She also plans to steal Courtney’s boyfriend, rebellious Dylan. Poisonous gossip Kelly spreads the word, nice guy Jake is in love with Courtney and little sister Theresa is in love with Dylan.
No adults are in view, and the school population seems to consist of a handful of students.
“Fifteen” will have its fans--the cast is attractive and talented--but “DeGrassi High” it’s not. PBS’ forthright, true-to-life series about teen issues (formerly “DeGrassi Jr. High”) still stands alone.
