High School Student to Attend Conference

Newport Harbor High School junior Derek Mann has been chosen to attend the 1991 National Young Leaders Conference in Washington from Tuesday through Feb. 10, when he will meet with selected elected politicians to discuss policy issues.

The secretary-treasurer of his class as well as a member of the school’s varsity tennis team, Mann will join other students from across the country at the conference. Its theme is, “The Leaders of Tomorrow Meeting the Leaders of Today.”

The students will participate in a mock congress at the conclusion of the conference.

Paul Kramer, a La Habra resident and student at Claremont-McKenna College, was named a distinguished scholar by the school for his academic performance during the fall semester.

The Cypress High School team of Michelle Satorhelyf, Jason Wong, Jimmy Chong and Jonathan Lim was named the winner of the recent Rancho Santiago College mathematics department computer problem-solving contest. Each received $100. Second place and $50 awards went to the Orange High School team of Dean Yimlamai, Joel Cloud, Darrell Hall and Matt Hohlfeld, while $25 each was awarded to the third-place Troy High School team of Sam Sun, Ravi Montenegro, Barry Adams and Michael Latteier. The event attracted 100 participants from 16 county high schools.

Cavan Concannon, a sixth-grader at Newport Elementary School, and Richard Stein, a fifth-grader at Mariners Elementary School, each won first place in the Newport-Mesa Unified School District’s annual spelling competition. Both received $50 savings bonds.

Second- and third-place winners, who received plaques, were Alex Brant-Zawadski, a fifth-grader at Harbor View Elementary School, and Majada Saucerman, a sixth-grader at Newport Heights Elementary School. The Rotary Club sponsored the event.

Anaheim resident Angie Williams was named Driver of the Year and Garden Grove resident Rafael Zaimez was named Maintenance Employee of the Year by the Orange County Transit District.

Celia Dorr, of Sterling Keystrokes Services in Fullerton, has been elected president of the county chapter of the National Assn. of Secretarial Services. She is from Diamond Bar.

Duane Schuster, a Neighborhood Watch block captain and community worker, has been named Citizen of the Year in La Palma and will be honored, along with others who received similar honors, at the Cypress College-sponsored Americana awards dinner on Feb. 23 at the Disneyland Hotel. The dinner raises money to provide scholarships and funds for needy students who attend the college.

Huntington Beach resident Sirpa Garretson was awarded a certificate for completing a colored-stones course at the Gemological Institute of America. The institute is a nonprofit research and educational organization serving the jewelry industry.
