COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Reynoso’s Homer Keys Ventura Win
Vince Reynoso’s solo home run in the bottom of the seventh inning put Ventura College ahead to stay in a 4-1 season-opening nonconference baseball victory over visiting Mission on Friday.
Reynoso broke a tie with his home run. Jason Kernan, a freshman from Newbury Park, pitched two innings of scoreless relief to earn the win.
Tom Lunsford padded Ventura’s lead with a pinch-hit two-run double with two outs in the eighth.
In other baseball openers:
Pierce 8, Citrus 5--Glenn Nahmias broke a 5-5 tie with a two-out, run-scoring double in the eighth to climax Pierce’s comeback from a two-run deficit in the Foothill tournament at Citrus.
Pat Huston added a booming two-run homer in the ninth for Pierce. Juan Soriano (1 2/3 innings) and Louis Birdt (two innings) held Citrus without a hit through the final 3 2/3 innings.
Glendale 7, Southwestern 2--Glendale scored four runs on six hits in the bottom of the first in a Foothill tournament game at Stengel Field.
Gary Vlcek of Glendale struck out nine and walked two in a complete-game performance.
San Mateo 11, Canyons 5--Canyons committed nine errors in a Cerritos-Fullerton tournament game at Cerritos College.
Canyons right-hander Roland De La Maza gave up one hit through the first six innings and five hits in 7 1/3 before he was removed. De La Maza had a seven-game winning streak snapped.
Cerritos 1, Valley 1 (12 innings)--After the game was called because it exceeded the tournament time limit, Cerritos advanced to the second round of the Cerritos-Fullerton tournament on total bases, 43-27. First baseman Jess Ceniceros homered to left with two outs in the top of the 12th to account for Valley’s lone run.
Long Beach City 4, Moorpark 1--Long Beach scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh to break a 1-1 tie in a first-round Rancho Santiago tournament game at Long Beach.
Rancho Santiago 11, Oxnard 10--Trailing, 11-3, Oxnard scored seven runs in the eighth in a Rancho Santiago tournament game that was called after eight innings because of darkness.
Oxnard’s Pat Avila was two for five, with a three-run home run and four runs batted in.
Antelope Valley 7, Taft 6--Tim Johnson pitched a complete game for in a nonconference win at Taft. Rod Markovich hit a three-run homer for the Marauders.
MEN’S BASKETBALL
San Francisco State 71, The Master’s 61--Terry Minnoy and Tom Bruner scored 16 and 13 points, respectively, for Master’s (14-8) in a nonconference loss at Division II San Francisco State.
WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
Cal State Northridge 67, Southern Utah 54--Julie Arlotto scored 22 points and became the school’s No. 2 all-time leading scorer in the nonconference game at Northridge.
Arlotto has 1,281 career points, surpassing Paula Moran’s 1,264. Joan Weinerth scored 19 points and Lisa Senette added 14 for CSUN (8-13).
