Noureddine Morceli, ranked No. 1 in the world at 1,500 meters, outdueled Marcus O’Sullivan of Ireland with 1 1/2 laps remaining and won the Wanamaker Mile in the Millrose Games at New York.
The Algerian finished in 3 minutes 53.50 seconds, second-fastest in meet history behind Eamonn Coghlan’s 3:53.0 in 1981.
Romanians finished 1-2 in the women’s mile, with world indoor record-holder Doina Melinte first in 4:33.81 and Margareta Keszeg second in 4:34.12.
Greg Foster, 32, rallied to win the 60-meter hurdles in 7.48 seconds, beating the 1990 national indoor champion, Tony Dees.
