HIGH SCHOOL BASKETBALL ROUNDUP : Royal Holds Loll to 17, Wins Again
In a game characterized by cold shooting, Royal High knew which player needed to be chilled more than any other in its Marmonte League game with Thousand Oaks on Friday night: senior forward Chris Loll.
Royal limited Loll to 17 points, nine under his season average, in a 54-48 victory at Royal. The Highlanders (16-7, 7-4 in league play), who have won five in a row, limited Thousand Oaks to a season-low total for points scored.
Thousand Oaks (17-4, 8-3) fell out of a first-place tie with Channel Islands. Tonight Thousand Oaks will play host to Channel Islands, a team the Lancers beat, 56-54, in three overtimes Jan. 12.
In the fourth quarter, Royal center Jared Byrne scored eight of his 12 points and made four of four free throws. Point guard Greg Gray also had 12 points for Royal.
Rio Mesa 75, Buena 56--Greg Bellman scored a game-high 23 points and Manuk Kayaoglu added 22 for Rio Mesa (11-11, 8-4) in a Channel League game at Buena. Lance Fay scored 22 points for Buena (12-9, 6-6).
Ventura 62, Dos Pueblos 38--Jon Seiler had 18 points and nine rebounds for host Ventura (12-9, 8-4) in a Channel League game.
Harvard 45, La Salle 42--Despite host La Salle’s attempt to slow the pace, Harvard won the San Fernando Valley League title for the second consecutive year. Markus Puhvel scored a game-high 15 points for Harvard (17-3, 8-0).
Grant 62, Poly 50--David Knight had 22 points and Brunell Mori had 15 rebounds for host Grant (16-2, 10-0) in an East Valley League game.
Monroe 94, South Gate 90 (2 OTs)--Lodis Woodmore made a three-point basket with three seconds left to send the game into overtime, then scored four points in the second overtime period to lead Monroe (11-10) in a nonleague game. Woodmore had 30 points and Stanley Deal added 28.
Fremont 74, North Hollywood 33--Fremont, ranked No. 1 in the state by Cal-Hi Sports, took a 24-7 lead after one quarter of a nonleague game at North Hollywood.
Saugus 71, Burroughs (R), 40--Greg Yumbar had 12 points and 10 rebounds for host Saugus in a Golden League game.
Calabasas 65, Santa Paula 58--Greg Waugh scored 15 points and added 23 rebounds, five steals and four assists in a Frontier League game. Joey Ramirez had 27 points for Santa Paula.
Campbell Hall 56, Brentwood 43--Using a full-court press, Campbell Hall jumped to a 17-2 lead early in the second quarter and was never challenged in its home Delphic League game.
Montclair Prep 57, L.A. Baptist 52--J. T. Billingslea scored 20 points and Chris Sanger added 12 points and 12 rebounds for host Montclair Prep (16-4, 6-2) in an Alpha League game.
Agoura 66, Simi Valley 63--Dennis Fowler made four free throws in the closing seconds to boost Agoura in a Marmonte League game at Simi Valley.
Newbury Park 73, Westlake 62--Tim Lane, who made 10 of 12 free throws, scored a game-high 25 points to pace Newbury Park in a Marmonte League game.
Alemany 79, Crespi 58--Alemany went on a 12-0 run in the fourth quarter in a Mission League game at home. Richard Dice and Will Burr each scored a game-high 24 points for Alemany (8-15, 3-7).
Antelope Valley 64, Canyon 52--Brock Chase scored a game-high 19 points and teammate Ryan Branch added 17 for Antelope Valley (11-12, 5-3) in a Golden League game at Canyon.
Santa Barbara 90, Hueneme 59--Tony Smith scored 14 points to lead Hueneme (6-15, 3-9) in a Channel League game at Santa Barbara (19-5, 9-3).
San Marcos 87, Oxnard 58--San Marcos (21-2, 12-0) clinched the Channel League title.
Nordhoff 77, Fillmore 67--Nordhoff’s Tim Sebek scored 26 points, leaving him two short of the school career scoring record of 1,109, in the Frontier League game.
Faith Baptist 92, Buckley 46--Alex Estrada recorded a triple-double for host Faith Baptist (12-8, 3-5) in a Delphic League game. Estrada had 30 points, 10 rebounds and 16 assists.
