The simple Lionel and American Flyer train...
The simple Lionel and American Flyer train sets that kept boys on their knees have given way to a hobbyists’ heaven that keeps an estimated 1% of the U.S. population in thrall.
Today’s train sets run the gamut from pricey Japanese bullet train replicas, deluxe German models, macro train sets with shoe box-size cars, micro train sets with locomotives small enough to fit inside a nutshell and digital systems that can individually control up to 80 trains on a single track.
They’re toys for big boys (and girls) with deep pockets. Prices run from $60 to $1,000 for complete sets and up to $6,000 for American Flyer antique locomotives.
For a look at the new world of trains, try the Great
American Train Show, closing today at the Fairplex, the Los Angeles County fairgrounds in Pomona.
Fifteen operating model layouts will be featured, with more than 350 tables of merchandise for sale or swap. The items include trains, of course, but also scenery products needed by any serious hobbyist intent on reproducing the mountain passes of Peru in the family rumpus room. T-shirts, mugs, caps and other train-themed paraphernalia also will be sold.
The show is from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. today in Buildings 6 and 7 at the Fairplex, 1101 W. McKinley Ave. Admission is $4.50 for adults; children under 12 free. Parking is $3 per vehicle.
