NHL ROUNDUP : Lemieux Suffers Another Injury

Mario Lemieux’s comeback will have to be put on hold.

The high-scoring Pittsburgh center, playing his third game after missing 10 months because of a back problem, injured his groin in the second period of the Penguins’ 6-2 victory over the Boston Bruins Saturday at Pittsburgh.

Early indications were that the injury had nothing to do with the back problem that required off-season surgery. But it was intimated that lack of conditioning caused the new injury.

The Penguins expected Lemieux to be ready for the start of this season. But an infection in his back caused him to miss the first half.

He returned last Saturday and had three assists. In his second game Thursday night he had a goal and another assist. However, he played double shifts. That may have been a mistake.

“He’s still in the training-camp type frame,” team physician Charles Burke said. “These types of pulls and strains happen in camp. We don’t think it’s anything to worry about. We’ll know a lot more tomorrow when we examine him.”

Lemieux, who skated off the ice early in the second period complaining of pain, did not accompany the team to Boston where the teams play again tonight.
