Kieishsha Garnes scored 38 points and had eight rebounds to lead San Diego State to a 79-75 overtime victory over Wyoming in a Western Athletic Conference game at SDSU Peterson Gym.

The Aztecs led, 36-34, at halftime, but Wyoming tied it at 68-68 at the end of regulation.

Garnes, a junior center, was 16 of 20 from the field and six of 10 from the line.

SDSU guard Michelle Miles had 11 assists in addition to her 20 points and six rebounds. Tameka McGlawn led the Aztecs (11-8, 4-2) with nine rebounds.

Krista Treide scored 18 points for Wyoming (8-11, 2-4).

MEN’S BASKETBALL

Christian Heritage overcame a 15-point deficit at halftime to beat Point Loma Nazarene, 75-71, at Grossmont College. Freshman guard Shane McKim was put in the starting lineup and responded with a game-high 32 points. He was eight for 10 from the field and 16 of 19 from the free-throw line for the Hawks (7-14), who outscored PLNC, 51-32, in the second half. Rusty Fallin led the Crusaders (10-14) with 19 points.

HIGH SCHOOL WRESTLING

Midwest City (Okla.), the nation’s top-ranked team, handed Poway its second loss at the Cowboy Classic in Stillwater (Okla.).

Poway (156-2-1) lost to Midwest City, 37-24, on the final day of the two-day tournament.

“They’re awfully good,” Poway Coach Wayne Branstetter said. “They deserve to be the No. 1 team in the country. They have some outstanding kids.

“We did lose a couple matches by just one point. Their guys were just better. We felt it was a respectable match.”

Poway had previously defeated Perry (Okla.) 32-19 earlier in the day.

Senior 157-pound Isaac Romberg (32-4) and sophomore 104-pound Steve Lee (25-4) were the only two Titans to go undefeated in their four matches.

Heavyweight Corey Farkas (33-1) had his undefeated record marred by a loss Friday to Edmond’s Paul Miller, who is ranked No. 1 in Okla.

WOMEN’S TENNIS

Point Loma Nazarene defeated visiting Cal Tech, 8-1, in both teams’ season opener. PLNC’s No. 1, Kim Wright, defeated Nancy Hua, 6-1, 6-0. Wright then teammed with Sue Woodling to defeat Hua and Fiona Lo, 6-2, 6-0 at No. 1 doubles.

BASEBALL

San Diego State rallied for two runs in the bottom of the ninth inning but fell to Cal State Los Angeles, 5-4, in the second of a three-game series at Smith Field. Brian Holliday (0-1), who struck out seven in 6 2/3 innings, was the losing pitcher for SDSU (1-1). Kipp Jeffries and Derek Vinyard each had two hits for the Aztecs. CSLA improved to 2-2. The two play again today at 2 p.m.

U.S. International allowed three unearned runs, and they proved to be the difference in a 6-3 loss to USC in Los Angeles. Jeff Matranga (0-2) took the loss for USIU (0-4). The Trojans (4-1) were leading, 3-2, when they scored three runs, two unearned, to break the game open in the bottom of the fifth. Sophomore Darrin Fletcher was 2 for 4 with two RBI for the Gulls.

PLNC swept a doubleheader from visiting Pomona Pitzer. The Crusaders (2-1) won the first game, 5-0, and the nightcap, 2-1. Dave Swearingen, Rich Miller and Ron Caton each had two hits for PLNC in the opener. Rodney Williams scored the winning run after an interference call in the bottom of the eighth inning in the second game. Pitchers Chris Wall and Mark Ratekin each got victories in their first decision for PLNC.

MEN’S VOLLEYBALL

UC San Diego collected its first victory by defeating host Menlo College, 17-15, 11-15, 15-13, 15-7, in a Pacific Coast Volleyball Conference match.

UCSD (1-4, 1-1) was led by Brent Couture with 19 kills and Matt Brigham with 12. Both Gerry Goldstein and Lampson Lamb each had 11 kills for UCSD.

Menlo dropped to 2-2, 0-2.
