BABY TRADE
Regarding “The Baby Trade,” by Mary Jo McConahay (Dec. 16): I spent three years recently in Honduras as a Peace Corps volunteer, and my wife is a Honduran from the capital city, Tegucigalpa. The article accurately portrays the grim circumstances that make Honduras a prime source of babies for American couples seeking to adopt.
The most disturbing aspect is the Catholic Church’s obsolete, immoral stance on artificial birth control. Several years ago, Tegucigalpa’s archbishop denounced the country’s family planning association as “agents of the demon.”
The Vatican should cough up the billions of dollars needed to support the millions of babies born every year in Honduras and elsewhere in their sphere of influence to mothers unable to care adequately for them. Even with the staggering infant mortality rate cited in the article, Honduras’ population is doubling every 20 years.
The future looks great for adopters, lousy for Hondurans.
