School District to Conduct Study on College Annex

The Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District board has selected two firms to prepare an environmental impact report of the site of Madison Elementary School, which is being leased to Santa Monica College.

The report is required before the college can obtain a long-term lease for the school on Arizona Avenue. The board authorized paying the firms $13,560 to conduct preliminary studies and determine the scope of the final report. The report is expected to cost $75,451 and to take about eight months to complete.

Santa Monica College will be required to reimburse the school district for the cost.

The college opened its Center for Humanities at the Madison school in September. It is renting the lot for two years but is seeking approval to remodel the school and lease it for another 64 years.

The Glendale firm of Fugro-McClelland will provide information on how noise, air quality, land use and other factors will be affected if the college uses the site for the long term. DKS Associates, based in Northern California with offices in Los Angeles, will assess potential changes in traffic flow and parking needs around the four-acre lot.
