From Times Staff and Wire Reports
Maine Paper Folds: With a headline of “Goodbye,” the final edition of Portland’s Evening Express rolled off the press, ending 108 years of publication. It also ended Portland’s status as the last northern New England city with both evening and morning dailies. The paper, a victim of dwindling readership and New England’s weak economy, has merged with the morning Portland Press Herald. Both papers are owned by Guy Gannett Publishing Co. The circulation of the Express, which peaked in the 1970s, had declined to just over 20,000 by last year.
