‘Death Squad’ Killed 15, Archbishop Says
SAN SALVADOR — The archbishop of San Salvador said Sunday that El Salvador’s army was responsible for the massacre of 15 peasants in a village near the capital last month.
“All the evidence gathered leads us solely and exclusively to point to the responsibility of members of the 1st Infantry Brigade in this crime, carried out with complete impunity and with characteristics of the death squads,” Archbishop Arturo Rivera Damas said.
He said the Roman Catholic Church’s investigation of the killings pointed to the involvement of the army’s 1st Brigade.
