P.M. BRIEFING : Nintendo, Sony Team Up for CD
TOKYO — Video game champion Nintendo Co. Ltd. and consumer electronics maker Sony Corp. announced today that they are teaming up to develop a compact-disc player for Nintendo’s popular Super Famicom video game software.
The companies refused to describe details on the development, but industry analysts said the link could lead to a powerful new CD format.
The analysts speculated that cooperation between the two could eventually extend beyond technology to include the debut of characters from Sony-owned Columbia Pictures Entertainment Inc. movie studios in video games.
“If Sony and Nintendo put their heads together, something very special may result,” said Colin Mills, senior research analyst at W. I. Carr (Overseas) Ltd.
