Voters will decide on a new mayor June 4, the Chula Vista City Council decided Monday night. The four members chose an election over appointing a new major to replace Gayle McCandliss, who died Jan. 17 after a yearlong battle with cancer. McCandliss was in office for less than a month after her election.

City Clerk Beverly Authelet said prospective candidates can file to run for the full-time position from March 7 through 28. Two possible names for appointment were floated at Monday’s council meeting--Councilman Leonard Moore and Police Chief Bill Winters--but neither received a second, Authelet said.
