Newspaper Dealers’ Hearing: Orange County Superior Court...
Newspaper Dealers’ Hearing: Orange County Superior Court Judge David Bricker continued a hearing until today on whether the Orange County Register should be temporarily ordered to stop terminating contracts with its independent distributors.
The judge Tuesday heard two hours of testimony in the case brought by 18 dealers who distribute the Register to stores and outdoor racks. The newspaper said it is taking the distribution in-house. It has terminated contracts with eight dealers and notified eight others that they would be let go.
The dealers allege in a lawsuit filed Monday that the newspaper acted improperly by terminating their contracts without cause, notice or any provision for compensation. The dealers claim that the action effectively stripped them of their franchises, some of which cost them more than $100,000.
