THOUSAND OAKS : Council Approves Road Improvement
The Thousand Oaks City Council agreed Tuesday to spend $200,000 to improve a road where a 16-year-old girl was killed last November.
The council voted unanimously to finance improvements for a section of Moorpark Road near Greenridge Street where the road curves sharply. Neighborhood residents say the bend is hazardous.
“We need to take steps to insure speed stays down to a safe level,” said Councilwoman Judy Lazar said. “You really can’t handle high speeds on that road.”
Residents demanded improvements after Thousand Oaks teen-ager Lisa Aguilar died in a Nov. 6 traffic accident. She suffered head injuries after she was thrown from a car. The driver, another 16-year-old, lost control of the vehicle as she rounded the curve, Ventura County sheriff’s officials said.
Three other teen-agers in the car suffered minor injuries.
Construction on the road is expected to begin in early 1992, Public Works Director John Clement said.
The posted speed limit on the road is 55 m.p.h., with signs warning drivers to slow to 25 m.p.h. City officials say they will recommend that the council lower the speed limit to 45.
