A Los Angeles police officer was shot and wounded Tuesday night in Watts near the Imperial Courts housing project, police said.

Details of the 9:20 p.m. shooting on the 11400 block of Gorman Avenue were sketchy and the Police Department’s officer-involved shooting unit was dispatched to the scene.

The wounded officer was rushed in a sheriff’s patrol car to St. Francis Medical Center in Lynwood. Hospital officials declined to comment on the officer’s condition and police declined to comment on the circumstances that led to the shooting.

Witnesses said it appeared that the officer was ambushed after responding to a disturbance. One witness said the officer was wounded in a leg from an AK-47 assault rifle.

A helicopter circled the area and officers cordoned off streets. Police said they were using dogs to search the neighborhood near the shooting for at least two gunmen. One was described by police as 18 to 20 years old and a known gang member.
