Iraq Telling Foreign Workers to Fight or Else, Global Union Group Charges
BRUSSELS — Iraq is forcing foreign workers to fight and has executed some who have refused, a global trade union group alleged today.
“Sources report on Egyptian and Sudanese workers being forcibly drafted into the Iraqi armed forces,” the International Confederation of Free Trade Unions said. “Some of them resisting the orders have been executed and at least in some cases their bodies returned to Egypt.”
The Brussels-based trade union organization also said many workers from Bangladesh are “engaged in manual work such as digging trenches for the Iraqi army.”
The group estimated at least 500,000 migrant workers were still trying to get out of Iraq.
