TENNIS ROUNDUP : Uwe-Steeb Beats Chang, 6-1, 7-5
Michael Chang will have plenty of time to see the sights on his first visit to Milan.
Chang, seeded fourth, was defeated by Carl Uwe-Steeb of Germany, 6-1, 7-5, in 83 minutes Tuesday night in the first round of the Milan Indoor tournament.
In other first-round action, Anders Jarryd of Sweden breezed past Roberto Raffa of Italy, 6-0, 6-1; No. 8 Alexander Volkov of the Soviet Union struggled past Cedric Pioline of France, 6-4, 6-7, 6-4; Karel Novacek of Czechoslovakia defeated Ronald Agenor of Haiti, 6-4, 6-2, and No. 3 Andrei Chesnokov of the Soviet Union downed Sebastian Soresini, 6-3, 6-3.
Top-seeded Andre Agassi overcame a shaky performance and second-seeded Andres Gomez narrowly fought off an upset in the Volvo-San Francisco tournament.
After an eight-week layoff, Agassi had difficulty against qualifier Jeff Tarango but won 7-6 (7-5), 6-3. Tarango ranks 139th in the world, and Agassi is sixth.
Gomez, of Ecuador, also had his problems with another qualifier, Brian Devening, ranked 371st, but won, 4-6, 6-4, 6-4.
John McEnroe had an easier time, beating Andrew Sznajder of Canada, 6-3, 6-0.
