Don Coryell has been named the honorary chairman of SDSU’s 1991 Aztec Athletic Foundation fund drive, which begins at 6 tonight with a kickoff function at the Hanalei Hotel. Coryell coached at SDSU from 1961 to 1972 before moving on to NFL positions with the St. Louis Cardinals and Chargers.
SIGNINGS
Tom Smith became the third Ramona High player to receive a Division I football scholarship when he announced he will sign a letter of intent with Weber State today. Smith, a 6-2, 240-pound defensive lineman, was a first team All-Avocado League selection and a second-team Times All-County selection.
Carlsbad High’s Calvin Coleman, a 6-0, 160-pound wide receiver, announced that he will sign with Arizona State today. Coleman, the half brother of New Jersey Nets forward Derrick Coleman, is expected to play defensive back at ASU.
MEN’S BASKETBALL
Point Loma Nazarene built a 15 point lead at halftime and rolled to a 104-94 victory over Azusa Pacific in front of 900 at Golden Gymnasium. The Crusaders got 21 points from Mark Bulgin and 20 from Rusty Fallin and improved to 11-14, 3-5 in the Golden State Athletic Conference.
BASEBALL
San Diego State snapped a two-game losing streak with an 8-6 victory over Cal Poly Pomona at Smith Field. Junior right-hander Clint Borman (1-0) allowed one earned run in eight innings and James Davis, who struck out the final two batters with one out and a runner on second in the ninth, picked up his first save for SDSU (2-2). Greg Quam and Marcelino Garcia were each 3-for-4 for the Aztecs. Brad Gennaro was 2-3 with three RBI. Pomona dropped to 1-3.
USD rallied for four runs in both the seventh and eighth innings, but had to settle for a 12-12 tie after UC Riverside scored six runs in the top of the eighth and the game had to be called because of darkness. Tony Moeder and Kevin Herde homered for the Toreros (1-2-1).
UCSD (0-1) was defeated, 11-3, by host Christ College, which scored four runs in the third and three in the fifth. For UCSD, Doran Yount went two for three and Steve Nowlan went two for four and scored a run. Christ College is 2-1.
Jason Huntley hit a home run in the second inning as PLNC defeated host Occidental College, 11-1. Huntley ws three for three with RBIs. Pitcher Chris Gunnett (1-0) struck out seven and walked three for PLNC (3-1).
WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
PLNC collected its seventh consecutive victory by defeating visiting Azusa Pacific, 71-48, in a Golden State Athletic Conference game. Camille Armijo scored 24 points to lead PLNC (17-6, 6-0) to its 11th win in 12 games. Shannon Abrams had 12 rebounds in addition to her 20 points for PLNC. Azusa Pacific is now 8-16, 1-6.
WOMEN’S TENNIS
Point Loma Nazarene dominated Whittier, 9-0, taking each match in straight sets. Kim Wright, PLNC’s No. 1 singles player, defeated Amanda Hutchinson, 6-0, 6-0. Wright and Sue Woodling, at No. 1 doubles, also won, 6-0, 6-0. Monica Clancy, Kelly Massa, Woodling and Tiffany Puckett each lost only one game en route to singles victories for the Crusaders (2-0).
