The Big East Conference became a full-fledged football league when Commissioner Mike Tranghese announced in Providence, R.I., that Rutgers, Temple, West Virginia and Virginia Tech, all independents, will join conference members Syracuse, Boston College, Miami of Florida and Pittsburgh next fall.

Tranghese said the Big East will have a champion after next season but is not sure how that champion will be determined because Miami and Virginia Tech play only one conference game each. By 1995, all teams will play at least five conference games a year.

Rutgers, Temple and West Virginia remain in the Atlantic 10 for all other sports, and Virginia Tech stays in the Metro Conference.
