Matisse in San Francisco: “Woman With Hat,” a landmark painting by Henri Matisse that set off a controversy when it was first displayed in Paris in 1905, is among 30 artworks bequeathed to the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art by longtime patron Elise Stern Haas. The Fauve portrait will go on view Feb. 28 along with other Haas donations, including examples by Picasso, Arp, Brancusi and O’Keeffe. “The Elise S. Haas collection is without a doubt one of the great gifts in the museum’s 56-year history,” museum director John R. Lane said.
