In a time of war and recession, the Year of the Ram, symbolizing peace and prosperity, can’t come soon enough.

So folks in South Pasadena will celebrate the Chinese New Year five days early with a festival from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at the public library, 1100 Oxley St.

Organizers promise a lion dance, food, a costume fashion show and demonstrations of Chinese finger painting, paper cutting and storytelling to usher in the successor to the Year of the Horse. Actually, the horse won’t gallop away until Feb. 14. The Chinese New Year always arrives with the second new moon of winter.

Lisa Yang, one of the organizers of the event, said there will be activities in both the library’s community room and in Library Park. The event is sponsored by the Chinese-American Club, Friends of the South Pasadena Public Library and the South Pasadena Senior Center.

Yen Lu Wong, adjunct professor in drama at USC, will narrate a demonstration of Chinese opera, and George Kuwayama, senior curator of Far Eastern art at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, will present a slide show of art from the National Palace Museum in Taipei.
