Vanilla Ice Holds Off Mariah Carey

Vanilla Ice, the Billboard magazine pop-album chart leader for the 15th week with “To the Extreme,” continues to hold off the surge of Mariah Carey, whose debut album is a solid No. 2. Her “Mariah Carey” is making a strong run at the top, fueled by her latest hit single, “Someday,” which jumped from No. 13 to No. 5 on the pop singles chart and is a shoo-in to reach the top. Sting’s “The Soul Cages” is the hottest new album on the chart, bounding from No. 30 to No. 10. “Gonna Make You Sweat” by the C&C; Music Factory tops the singles chart for the second week.

* Gloria Estefan’s first album since her accident last year is off to a fast start, debuting at No. 48, boosted by her hot single, “Coming Out of the Dark,” which is No. 26 on the pop singles chart. Look for Estefan’s album to leap into the Top 20 next week.
