Volvo Awards Ad Account: Four months after facing ridicule and a legal challenge over a TV spot that faked the safety of one of its cars, Volvo of North America handed its $40-million ad business to a new agency. The upstart New York ad agency, Messner Vetere Berger Carey Schmetterer, succeeds New York-based Scali, McCabe, Sloves, which held the account for 23 years but resigned after the controversy over the ad, which featured a “Monster Truck” crushing some cars, but not a Volvo. The Volvo had been reinforced while the other cars had been weakened.
