IRVINE : City Panel Names Park in Turtle Rock

A recently completed park in Turtle Rock was dubbed Canyon Park this week.

The city Community Services Commission unanimously chose the name Wednesday night over five other names suggested by commission staff members, such as Shady Park and Patriot Park. The 3-acre park, built by the Irvine Co., will serve the new residents of the area. Houses, apartments and condominiums are still under construction.

The small park is on a road called Canyon Park near Turtle Rock Drive.

Canyon Park contains picnic tables, a grassy area and a restroom. The city may add a playground or a half-court basketball court depending on city funds and residents’ preferences, said John McAllister, a superintendent in the Community Services Department.

The Irvine Co. wasn’t required by the city to build the park but did so to make the area more attractive to residents, McAllister said.
