The Red Cross said it will send a second convoy of emergency medical supplies and sanitation equipment to Iraq. The convoy, to set out Saturday, will be about as large as the first one, which carried 19 tons of supplies to Baghdad from Tehran, the Iranian capital, said Paul-Henri Morard, spokesman for the International Committee of the Red Cross. He said the ICRC has received word that the first convoy, which left Jan. 31, arrived safely. Some of the supplies for the second shipment were donated by the Iranian Red Crescent, the Muslim equivalent of the Red Cross. Humanitarian shipments are exempted from the U.N. embargo imposed on Iraq after its Aug. 2 invasion of Kuwait.
