COLLEGE BASEBALL ROUNDUP : Valley Runs Off With Its 1st Win, 12-7

Winless in its first three games, the Valley College baseball team finally stole a victory--literally.

Valley ignited a stagnant offense with 14 stolen bases and scored more runs in one game than its three previous games together.

Valley stole 14 bases in 16 attempts and beat Imperial Valley, 12-7, Thursday in a first-round game of the College of the Desert tournament in Palm Springs.

Chad Ratliff and Kevin Claytor each stole three bases, and Joe Ishikawa stole home for Valley (1-2-1). Left-hander Steve Trainor (1-0) earned the win, giving up one run and two hits in four innings. He left the game after being hit in the hip by a line drive.

Moorpark 9, El Camino 6--Trailing, 6-1, in the bottom of the third, Moorpark began its comeback when Mike Keegan hit a two-run double. Moorpark (3-2) added three runs in the fourth to tie the score then pulled away for the nonconference win.

Chris Chandler and Jeff Sommer had two hits each for Moorpark. Right-hander Tim DelMonte (1-1) pitched five innings of scoreless relief to pick up the win.

Canyons 6, Cerritos 6--Billy Horvat was three for five with two runs batted in for Canyons (0-3-1) in the nonconference game suspended after nine innings because of darkness.

Robert Barrena and Josh Bergara each added two hits, and Canyons’ Jon Beauchemin hit a solo home run in the third inning.

Ventura 7, Compton 2--Sam Arroyo, a freshman right-hander from Buena High, gave up two runs in eight innings to lead Ventura to a nonconference win at Compton.

Arroyo (1-0) gave up seven hits, walked one and struck out four. Ross Gotwals and Tim Cornish were each two for five and Kevin Zoll was two for three for Ventura (4-0).

East Los Angeles 5, Antelope Valley 3--Visiting Antelope Valley turned five double plays but could not complete a crucial one with one out and the bases loaded in the seventh inning of the nonconference game. Shortstop Heath Fine bobbled a ground ball over the middle, and East Los Angeles (3-2) went on to score three runs in the inning. Tim Johnson (1-1) gave up only two earned runs in eight innings but took the loss.

UC Riverside 7, The Master’s 0--Tony Richards and Eric Welker combined on a seven-hitter to ruin Master’s opener in a nonconference game at Riverside. Brett O’Dea, Ruben Ayala, Steve Bishop and Chad Townsend each had two hits for Riverside (3-2-1).
