Pitcher Kirk McCaskill became the fifth Angel with a 1991 salary of $2 million or more when he agreed Thursday to a one-year contract for $2.1 million, a raise of $1,132,500.

McCaskill could soon be joined at the $2-million level by first baseman Wally Joyner, who was to have an arbitration hearing today in Los Angeles. Joyner, who played only 83 games last season because of a stress fracture in his right kneecap, filed at $2.1 million. The Angels filed at $1.65 million, a cut of $100,000 from his 1990 salary. A decision in Joyner’s case could be made Saturday.

Michael Watkins, who with Barry Axelrod represents Joyner, said Thursday there was little chance of reaching an agreement before the hearing. Joyner won his arbitration case last winter after the Angels submitted a figure of $1,225,000 and he filed at $1.75 million.

“Not unless the Angels come off their figures, which they’ve said they won’t,” Watkins said. “They’ve said they would pay $1.75 (million) plus incentives, but that’s not enough. . . .

“We’re tired of this. We know they’re negotiating with other players and not with us. If they want to take us to the wall, let them.”

Also aiming for $2 million is 18-game winner Chuck Finley, who filed for arbitration at $2.8 million. The Angels filed at $1.75 million. Finley’s hearing is scheduled next week in Chicago.

Already under contract to the Angels for $2 million or more in 1991 are outfielder Dave Winfield ($3.2 million), third baseman Gary Gaetti ($2.7 million), catcher Lance Parrish ($2.25 million) and pitcher Mark Langston ($3.25 million).

McCaskill was 12-11 with a 3.25 earned-run average in 1990, when he earned $967,500. He underwent surgery on his right elbow on Oct. 4 to remove loose fragments and trim spurs, a procedure so successful that he said last week his arm feels “brand new.” He had filed for arbitration at $2.4 million, compared with the Angels’ figure of $1.65 million.

Beside Joyner and Finley, third baseman Jack Howell and outfielders Luis Polonia and Dave Gallagher also are scheduled for arbitration hearings.

The Angels also announced pitchers Jeff Richardson and Cliff Young had agreed to one-year deals. Richardson allowed one hit in one-third of an inning for the Angels and Young was 1-1 in 17 games.
