YOUTH, IDENTITY, POWER: The Chicano Movement by Carlos Munoz Jr. (Verso: $17.95, illustrated). The growing political awareness and power of California’s Hispanic population will continue to exert an increasingly powerful influence on the development of America’s most populous state. A professor of ethnic studies at UC Berkeley and a former leader of the Chicano Student Movement, Munoz offers the first book-length history of the Chicano movement. It’s regrettable that this significant work is not more readily accessible to the general reader: “Youth, Power, Identity” is an example of traditional scholarship, heavily laden with footnotes and academic jargon. The significance of the subject warrants wider exposure.
