Aztecs Defeat Hawaii for Volleyball Crown

San Diego State defeated Hawaii in three games and defended its Asics Grand Prix Men’s Volleyball Tournament championship Sunday at Peterson Gym.

SDSU beat Hawaii, 15-9, 15-13, 15-4 and finished the tournament with four victories in five matches, edging Long Beach State in the tiebreaker by two games, 14-4 to 14-6.

Brett Winslow, Mike Mattarocci and Mike Schlegel were named to the all-tournament team.

WOMEN’S TENNIS

La Jolla’s Ditta Huber won a qualifying spot for the $150,000 Virginia Slims of Oklahoma by scoring a 6-3, 6-1 victory over Dawn Booth of Kansas. Huber, 15, a freshman at San Diego Academy in La Jolla and still an amateur, begins play in the qualifying for the main draw on Saturday in Oklahoma City. She and Booth also advanced in doubles with a 6-1, 6-2 victory in the championship match.

BASEBALL

Eight runs in the seventh inning lifted SDSU (5-2) to a 9-4 nonconference victory over visiting Pacific (1-5).

CYCLING

SDSU dominated the Women’s A race and won the team championship at the University of San Diego Gran Prix circuit race. SDSU won 86 of its 200 points in the women’s race.

FOOTBALL

USD announced its 1990 football award winners. Senior quarterback Brendan Murphy of Rancho Santa Fe was named most valuable offensive player and senior defensive back Darryl Jackson the most valuable defender. The scholar-athlete award went to junior running back John Eck, a political science major with a 3.85 grade point average who won for the second time. Sophomore Matt Horeczko was the top pecial teams player and Ray Smith, a senior offensive tackle who went to University of San Diego High, won the Strength Coach’s Award.
