3 Navy Men Wounded in Holdup at Bar
Three U.S. Navy men were wounded, one critically, early Tuesday in a holdup of a bar in Long Beach, police said. Two gunmen burst into the bar, the USS Someplace at 1900 Long Beach Blvd., shortly after midnight, fired a warning shot, robbed several patrons and shot the three servicemen because they apparently failed to respond quickly enough, authorities said.
The sailors were identified as Shayne Shields, 20, a crewman aboard the USS Racine, who was hospitalized in critical condition at Long Beach Memorial Medical Center, and two crew members of the USS Prairie, who were reported in stable condition at St. Mary Medical Center.
Witnesses told police that one of the holdup men was about 25, 6 feet, 2 inches tall with a thin build, and the other was between 30 and 35, 5 feet, 7 inches tall and about 165 pounds.
