Twelve players were ejected, including 11 from Chicago State, after a fight just before the end of the first half that resulted in the Cougars’ forfeiting Tuesday night’s game to Illinois State at Normal, Ill.

The game was stopped with Illinois State (5-18) leading, 39-23. Because Chicago State (3-19) had only two players still eligible after the brawl, the game was declared a forfeit and the score stood.

One Illinois State player was ejected after the fight, which capped a first half that included two technical fouls against Chicago State and a total of 25 personal fouls.

No injuries were reported.

Just before the halftime buzzer sounded, Illinois State’s Reggie Wilson and Chicago State’s Carnel Ross dived for a rebound at the corner of the court near the Illinois State bench.

Referee Dan Chrisman said Ross “committed a flagrant foul . . . then two other Chicago State players who were in the game got involved and were subsequently ejected for fighting.

Said Chicago State Coach Rick Pryor: “When the game first started, it was obvious that the officials wanted to take control. I apologize to Illinois State University, but I will not apologize for the officiating.” TOP 25 TEAMS
