Some insurers have unveiled plans to help with the cost of coverage for policyholders serving in the Gulf :

* Transamerica Insurance Co. may allow families of U.S. troops who are activated to defer premium payments on auto and homeowners policies for up to six months.

* GEICO Corp. may offer a 25% reduction on auto insurance premiums to policyholders who have served in Operation Desert Shield.

* Allstate may set up new premium payment schedules.

* State Farm Mutual Insurance Co. is discussing options including suspending the policy on a car that will not be driven while its owner is serving in the Gulf.
