Work Crew in Egypt Finds Ancient City
ASSIUT, Egypt — A crew digging to lay water pipes Wednesday uncovered an ancient city with buildings that date to the Roman, Coptic Christian and Islamic periods, Assiut’s governor said.
Hassan Alfy said the 50-acre site would be kept under police guard until the official Antiquities Organization could send experts.
He said that five Coptic Christian churches, several monasteries and other ancient buildings were found about seven yards below the surface, and that many of them are in poor condition. Coptic and Roman writings were found on walls, and hundreds of gold and bronze coins also were found, he said.
