The allies pressed on with the air war today but focused on supply lines and troop concentrations after Iraq charged that a U.S. raid on a building in Baghdad killed hundreds of civilians. The attack that Iraqi officials said killed up to 500 people stirred anger in much of the Arab world. “Death to America!” angry demonstrators in Jordan shouted.

The U.S. military said it is considering ways to avoid killing civilians in Iraq, including announcing its bombing targets in advance. Marine Brig. Gen. Richard Neal said the allies have avoided bombing many strategic targets in Baghdad because of the risk to civilians, and continue to evaluate and re-evaluate their targets daily. Each day’s targets are approved by the top U.S. commander.

Iraq fired two Scud missiles at the northern Saudi city of Hafr al-Batin, but they broke up in the air, raining debris that destroyed an auto-repair shop and a house.

Journalists were invited by the Iraqis to tour a Baghdad hotel the Pentagon says contains a key military command center. The reporters said they saw no signs that that is the case. The Rashid Hotel is the only one in Baghdad still open, and all foreign journalists covering the war stay there.

Two American airmen were killed in the crash of a U.S. EF-111A electronic jamming and radar-detection jet.
