WORLD : 9 Skiers Killed in Avalanche
From Times Wire Services
BRIANCON, France — Nine Dutch skiers were killed in the French Alps when they were buried by an avalanche apparently set off by earth tremors, local officials said today. It was the worst killer avalanche in Europe in 10 years.
Rescue workers had been searching since Wednesday afternoon for the nine, who were swept away by a 250-yard-wide avalanche in an area of the Alps where there had been numerous smaller snowslides.
Local officials said slight tremors were suspected of loosening the wave of snow after several recent snowstorms.
