Mariners Invite Salkeld to Training Camp as Non-Roster Player
Former Saugus High standout pitcher Roger Salkeld has been invited to the Seattle Mariners’ training camp as a non-roster player.
Salkeld, ranked by Baseball America magazine as Seattle’s No. 1 minor league prospect, will report with pitchers and catchers Feb. 23 in Tempe, Ariz.
Bret Harnett, 26, of Las Vegas, defeated Mike Bronfeld of Santa Barbara, 15-14, 15-10, to win the men’s championship of the Heartbreakers Open at Racquetball World in Canoga Park. Harnett later teamed with Bronfeld to win the doubles championship against Rick Sandello of Whittier and Dave Genevay of Anaheim, 15-6, 15-5.
Mae Chin-Varon of Tarzana won the women’s open championship in a match that lasted only five minutes. Her opponent, Dee Ferreira-Worth of Anaheim Hills, pulled a quadriceps muscle with Chin-Varon leading, 2-0, and had to retire.
Chris Perry and Lolita Pile of Cal State Northridge top a list of six Matador track and field athletes who are scheduled to compete in the Northern Arizona Invitational at the Walkup Skydome in Flagstaff on Saturday.
Perry, the 1990 NCAA Division II champion in the men’s long jump, will compete in the long jump and the 200 meters.
Pile, the runner-up in the women’s triple jump at the 1989 and ’90 Division II meet, is entered in that event and the long jump.
The other Northridge entries are Chris Pippens (men’s 55 and 200 meters), Schaun Reed (men’s 55), Charlotte Vines (women’s 55 and 200) and Kim Young (women’s 55-meter hurdles).
The Valley Conference wrestling finals will be held at El Camino Real High on Saturday, starting at 10 a.m. Championship finals are expected to start at 4:30 p.m. El Camino Real, the three-time defending City Section champion, will attempt to win its eighth consecutive conference title.
