COMMUNITY COLLEGE BASKETBALL ROUNDUP : Cypress Shuts Down Orange Coast Offense in Overtime
Brian Kenney scored six points in overtime and Cypress College held Orange Coast scoreless for the final 3 minutes 41 seconds of the extra period for a 75-66 victory in an Orange Empire Conference game in Costa Mesa.
OCC (11-17, 2-9 in conference) seemed primed for the upset when the Pirates took a 57-49 lead with 6:27 left, but second-place Cypress (21-10, 8-3) rallied behind center Eric Pauley, a few fortunate bounces and some officials’ calls that maybe could have gone either way.
Pauley scored Cypress’ final nine points in regulation, including a short bank shot to give Cypress a 64-63 lead with 1:13 left. OCC’s Agustin Heredia made one of two free throws with 57 seconds left and the Pirates tied it, 64-64.
Michael Wenzlaff missed a 15-footer that rolled off the rim with three seconds left in regulation.
Pauley scored 28 points, including a single-game Cypress record 14 free throws. He was 14 of 17 from the line. Kenney added 17 for Cypress. Shane Takeshita scored 16, Heredia 16 and Brian Spratt 13 for OCC.
