P.M. BRIEFING : Chrysler White-Collar Cuts Told
Chrysler Corp., which cut its non-union work force throughout last year, plans to eliminate another 3,000 white-collar jobs, it was reported today.
The reduction would trim the company’s non-union work force to the lowest level since the early 1980s, when Chrysler was battling bankruptcy.
The Wall Street Journal said most of the 3,000 new white-collar job cuts will come through special early retirement offers.
Chrysler spokesman Tom Houston said the company has been eliminating white-collar jobs since July, 1989, when Chairman Lee Iacocca announced a $1-million cost-cutting program.
At that time, Chrysler had about 24,200 non-union workers. Today, the company has about 21,400 non-union workers and the cost-cutting target has been boosted to $3 billion.
