Man Threatens to Blow Up Home; Bomb Is Defused
Los Angeles County sheriff’s explosives experts defused a homemade pipe bomb planted in an ice chest by an Azusa man who had threatened Thursday to blow up his home, authorities said.
Vernon Nollar allegedly telephoned the psychiatric unit of a veteran’s hospital in the Los Angeles area and said he planted a bomb in his Azusa home on the 300 block of Grandin Avenue .
Police evacuated about 15 neighboring homes and called the Sheriff’s Department bomb squad. The eight-inch pipe bomb was defused and Nollar was hospitalized at an undisclosed mental facility.
