19-Year-Old Shot Outside His Apartment

A 19-year-old man was shot twice Thursday night as he stood outside his apartment speaking to his mother, police said.

The shooting occurred about 8:15 p.m. in the 800 block of West La Jolla Road, Police Sgt. Ken Gardner said. The victim, who was not identified, was apparently standing on the stairs outside his apartment and speaking to his mother, who was inside.

The victim heard his name being called from a car and walked downstairs toward the vehicle, Gardner said. When he saw a passenger pointing a gun at him, the victim turned to run but was shot twice in the groin, Gardner said.

The victim was taken to UCI Medical Center in Orange, where his condition was not immediately known.
