A truck carrying a load of dynamite exploded an hour after it overturned today in southern Thailand, killing at least 50 people, police said.

Most of the victims were villagers who had flocked to the crash site, police said. Seventy to 80 people were injured in the blast on a highway about 480 miles south of Bangkok.

The 10-wheel truck was carrying a load of dynamite from the port of Phuket on the road to Bangkok. It overturned at a sharp curve in the highway.
