Anthony Jones will replace the injured Tracy Spann as the challenger to lightweight champion Pernell Whitaker on Feb. 23 at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas.

Spann, ranked No. 1 by the International Boxing Federation, suffered a 15-stitch cut over an eye while sparring Thursday at Las Vegas, promoter Dan Duva said today from his New Jersey office.

It will be the second lightweight title bid for Jones, of Detroit’s Kronk Gym. He was knocked out in the sixth round by Edwin Rosario, then the World Boxing Assn. champion, July 9, 1989, at Atlantic City, N.J.
