WEST COAST CONFERENCE ROUNDUP : Watson Leads Way as St. Mary’s Gets Past Santa Clara, 69-64
Thurman Watson scored five of his 25 points in the last two minutes as St. Mary’s held off a second-half surge by Santa Clara and beat the Broncos, 69-64, Friday night in a West Coast Conference game at Moraga, Calif.
With St. Mary’s leading, 58-56, and two minutes to play, Watson hit three of four free throws over the next 50 seconds, then stole a pass at midcourt and dribbled in for a dunk to give the Gaels a 63-56 lead with 1:00 remaining.
St. Mary’s, 9-15 overall and 5-6 in the WCC, has beaten Santa Clara three consecutive games by a combined nine points.
The Broncos (15-10, 6-5), who are 3-7 on the road, were led by Ron Reis, who had 19 points and 13 rebounds.
San Francisco 89, San Diego 81--Tim Owens scored a career-high 33 points and Orlando Smart added 18 points and 11 assists for San Francisco as the Dons upset second-place San Diego at San Francisco.
The Dons (11-13, 4-7) trailed for the first 17 minutes before taking a 36-34 lead, and they were ahead, 42-37, at halftime. San Diego (16-8, 8-3) regained the lead once early in the second half before the Dons roared back in front to stay.
Owens had 20 points in the second half.
