Rod Rosales scored 18 points and Jeff Cummins added 11 as Kennedy advanced to the second round of the Division II-A playoffs with a 65-41 victory over Whittier.

Leading, 15-9, after one quarter, Rosales, who was sidelined until the second half of the season because of knee surgery, scored 11 of Kennedy’s second-quarter points as the Irish (17-8) extended their lead to 31-17 at halftime.

The Cardinals (9-17) had trouble throughout the game with Kennedy’s defense, which was anchored by 6-foot-9 junior center Jermaine Galloway. Galloway blocked five Whittier shots, grabbed 16 rebounds and scored 10 points despite having to leave the game midway through the third quarter after committing his fourth foul.

“We were flat tonight. If we are going to advance any further, this team will have to play much better,” said Kennedy Coach John Mayberry.

Whittier was led by Renan Gutierrez with 14 points.

Kennedy, the Garden Grove League champion, will play the winner of the North Torrance-Burroughs game Tuesday at a site to be determined.
