Study Backs Tilt-Rotor Aircraft: Development of a commercial tilt-rotor aircraft could significantly relieve air traffic congestion by the turn of the century and is economically feasible, the federal study says. It estimates that tilt-rotor planes could serve 12 million passengers at urban “vertiports” on the East Coast by the year 2000. The planes would take off and land vertically, then rotate their engines to fly horizontally like airplanes. Opponents say the system will be too costly.
