Pratt & Whitney to Cut Up to 1,500 Jobs: Citing cuts in military spending and the woes in the airline business, United Technologies Corp.’s Pratt & Whitney unit said the trims in the first half of the year will amount to 4% of its domestic work force. Most of the layoffs, which will begin in March, will occur at the jet engine maker’s Connecticut plants; others will occur at facilities in Maine, Georgia and Florida. Last August, Pratt & Whitney had announced plans to eliminate 4,000 jobs by the end of 1993.
