La Verne : Theater Issue Put on Ballot
The City Council has agreed to let voters decide whether to prohibit the construction of movie theaters and other assembly facilities with more than 1,000 seats.
The Small Town Preservation Committee had gathered enough signatures to force the council to either adopt the measure outright or place it on the ballot. The council voted unanimously Tuesday to place the measure on the April 14, 1992, ballot.
The measure was prompted by plans by Edwards Theaters Circuit Inc. to build a 12-screen, 2,950-seat theater. However, that project will be unaffected by the 1992 ballot measure. The City Council already approved the theater in concept at its Feb. 4 meeting.
